Skulls and Stripes

I was putzing around my hood trying to "take some exercise" in the form of an extended walk this evening. I haven't worn these Edelman boots almost since their purchase three years ago, but they seemed like the perfect, tromping shoes. So I thought I'd snap this impromptu outfit that went with them.

A little skull, a little neon, a little moto boot. And a nice stroll in the early evening.
I love pulling out stuff that never really got worn and throwing it together on the fly. But having just cleared out a TON of purses and bags for re-sale, (because I also can't bear to hoard) I'm thankful I kept my favorite fringe purse. It's back in a big way right now.
And speaking of "on the fly", it was a super, no-makeup day. Literally just BB Cream, (for today's intensive, Santa Barbara sun) and mascara. It's a nice change of pace.

Maxi Dress, Maxi Ease

I'm really impressed with Lulu's.com They have an amazing variety of trendy options, but I didn't realize that their own, house brand garments were so cute and well constructed!
This maxi from Lulu's was incredibly reasonable on the price point and I love the lining which came in handy when the windy night air blew up my hem...

There are some super cute, maxi finds at Lulu's right now. Check them out here.

Friday On The Run

Hi Friends!

After a week long hiatus from blogging it feels good to be back online. No great tragedies of broken cameras or frozen computers occurred, but work and life got so far ahead of creative fashion that it was challenging to find the time to snap a single pic.
But today I'm running every conceivable errand. And I want to do it still feeling like a little effort was made. So although jeans still win the day with practicality, some heels and lace give them a little edge.

Like these cherry red stilletos and my favorite clutch from last year's trip to Paris. Both add a little something exra.
And it's a bit cloudy and overcast in SM this morning. Not cold enough for a jacket but certainly brisk enough for long sleeves...

I'm happy to have the day to "get it all done". (And hopefully with a little panache). Have a great weekend!

Set to Date

How do you go from work to dinner out in 15 minutes?

Ditch the boots, lose the jeans, throw a quick curl in your hair with a hot roller set, change your lipstick, and head on out!

I started my work day in these rockin', Steve Madden camouflage booties, but quickly changed into Sam Edelman, spiked heels for a dinner around the corner.
I swapped the grey, work skinnies for a leatherette, pencil skirt, and put in hot rollers for ten minutes. I changed my red lips to a subtle pink to complement my shoes and bag.

Top: Timing, Heels: Sam Edelman, Booties, Steve Madden, Blazer: H&M, Bag: Gifted, Skirt: Zara

It only takes 15 minutes to swap out if your core pieces are good basics. A pencil skirt, a good, black blazer, and some nude heels and a neutral bag will keep your look classic and fresh.

Set Life: For Life

This week I'm back to the grind after a single day off, and that means back to my Jeans/T-Shirt/Moto-Boot uniform.
But even the softest and best, white T-shirts and tanks can get a little stale after a while. I wanted to find another way to wear this vegan leather, laser cut top I'd bought in the winter, but the long sleeves weren't working for me anymore. So I hacked them off and left the edges rough and distressed, creating a perfect cap sleeve.
I also rolled down one of my favorite pairs of winter, work boots. Often when buying high label boots, you'll find that the mark of quality comes from having an outside as well as an inside faced in leather, so you can roll them down and maintain the look.

So I launch into the warm weather by adapting my winter togs to shoot.

Cheetah Chubby

Happy Monday All!

Today is officially my last day on Wipeout, and I have exactly 24 hours between this show's wrap and my next commercial to get hair color, mani/pedi, teeth whitening, grocery shopping, and apartment cleaning all done before Wednesday. Ahhh! So much to do, so little time!
But I can't complain. This past weekend I was able to take Saturday and Sunday off and celebrate 17 years with my, (long suffering) husband. Almost two decades have gone by and we still look at each with surprise and excitement. I can't begin to say how much I love him. It's funny though. We took a couple of snaps during our anniversary lunch at the Getty Center, but I didn't want to document anything beyond a couple of shots as mementos. I just wanted to stay in the moment all day and not think about posing together or constantly recording our lives.

So instead I'll blog this little outfit I donned earlier in the week, which I wore to a quick business meeting before heading to set. Living, (and meeting up) on Montana lends itself to some really funky but casual wear. Silk caftan dress. Booties. A slightly warmer, chubby jacket for the early morning chill...

I hope your week is full of promise.

Kicking it, 70's Style

I absolutely love the fashion of the 70's. From the disco ball glitter and jumpsuits, to the simplicity of the "Dazed and Confused" wardrobe styling that included bell bottomed, high waisted jeans with ever so slightly cropped tops and wedge heels. 70's style is my jam.

So I was excited to stumble upon these Levi's wide legged jeans not too long ago at a favorite thrift haunt. Paired with my vintage top and some serious, wooden heels they scream 70's, but feel very current. I think the skinny jean is here to stay, but wide legs are really making a comeback this spring and I am all about that!
And if we're giving a little nod to Taxi Driver, we're gonna need a big brimmed hat.
Another note: I was feeling pretty unhealthy on my last TV gig, so I opted for Kreation Cafe's 3 day, juice cleanse re-boot. It really does get you back on track to fit those high waisted jeans!
Jeans: Levi's, Heels: Stuart Weitzman, Top: Vintage, Necklace: H&M, Cuff: Gift, Hat: Boutique

I'm going to try some denim on denim stylings with these bad boys next. Until then!

Instyler Pro: A Little "How To"

For the past several weeks I've been raving on Blogger, Twitter and Instagram about the Instyler Pro. Like many makeup artists working in film and TV, I get tasked with also doing hair about 30/40% of the time. So I'm delighted when a product comes along that not only shortcuts the time consuming process of hairstyling, but actually delivers on its promise to make it easy!

I'm going to add a little, morning honesty. Below is how I look when my day begins. That's my hair folks. And that's on a "not-so-bad", hair day. Yikes! Normally I'd have to flat iron out the frizz, then add flat iron waves or throw in my curling iron for volume, and probably use hot rollers for shine and height. But now that I have my instyler, (which simultaneously uses a flat iron barrel, a curling barrel, and a brush for smoothing, waving, curling, and polishing) I can use one tool to get it done. Here's how:

Step 1: Separate your hair into sections. I find 6-7 pieces is key. Left side top, left side bottom, right side top, right side bottom, back of the head, and the crown.
Step 2: Determine where you want the wave to go and in what direction. For beach waves that pull away from the face, hold the barrel facing straight downwards and curl the hair over and outward, making sure to clamp as close to the root as possible.  (Note: For this look the brush must face forward and the iron to the back).
Step 3: Release the curl making sure that the ends are not clamped but remain out of the iron. This allows the waves a more natural finish. Don't finger comb. Let the wave sit and cool. Also, when creating beach waves it's important to "over-direct". In this case, clamp and push your barrel forward from the root to create additional volume.
Step 4: Wrap and secure hair with ends out. If you are getting towards the crown and the back of the head, you can shift the iron horizontally instead of vertically to get a natural lift on the top, back sections.
Step 5: Loosen the curls with fingers only. You can then shake out the hair and separate with a comb or pick.
Step 5: Use your fingers to move waves where you want them placed. Secure with a blast of light hold hair spray. For extra volume, add a little dry shampoo to the roots and shake upsidown. (For this look, I added no product as my hair was slightly dirty).
And there you are. California beach waves with natural volume, no fuss, and minimal product! All in 7-10 minutes.
The Instyler Pro is available at professional distributers across the country here.
